Apply for a new hackney carriage or private hire driver's licence
All applicants for a private hire or hackney carriage driver's licence must satisfy us that they are a fit and proper person to hold a licence. We do not issue dual licences, but you can apply for both private hire and hackney carriage driver's licences. Our policy requires that to apply you must:
- be over the age of 18 years
- have held a valid full UK driving licence for a minimum of 12 months. You will be asked to provide your licence as part of the application
- undertake our training for Safeguarding and Child Sexual Exploitation (CSE)
- undertake and pass our knowledge test, which includes geographic knowledge of South Ribble, our licensing policy, law, conditions and basic English assessment
- undertake and pass our in house taxi course or NVQ Level 2 course
- prove you have the right to work in the United Kingdom
- provide an enhanced DBS disclosure. This must be undertaken by a company contracted by us to provide this service. Must be within 3 months from the date of issue. Apply for DBS disclosure .You must then sign up to the DBS update service with your certificate
- provide a DVLA Group 2 medical assessment, undertaken by your own GP or a registered GP who has access to your full medical records. Must be within 3 months from the date of issue
- provide a DVLA check code to enable your driving licence to be checked
- recent passport size photograph
- complete the application form in full. The applications are available below.

Any applicant who has lived outside the UK wihtin the lat 10 years will be required to produce a certificate of conduct, translated into English, from each of the Countires that they have lived in within that period.
Any time limit on a document means from the date it was issued until the date you submit your application.

Please note, if your application is not complete within 3 months, it will be rejected, and you will have to start again if you wish to become a licensed driver.
