The Council has agreed investment to provide a major boost to its sporting landscape confirming plans to introduce three brand-new padel courts at South Ribble Tennis Centre.

Padel is one of the world’s fastest growing sports and is set to be a popular addition to South Ribble’s Leisure offer.

The addition of the new courts mark continuation of significant investment in the centre’s facilities and reflects South Ribble’s commitment to expanding active, inclusive opportunities for residents.

Construction is expected to begin soon, with the courts set to be available for public later this year.

Councillor Clare Hunter, Cabinet Member for Leisure and Wellbeing at South Ribble Borough Council said, “It’s brilliant that we are bringing Padel to our Tennis Centre. The sport is on the rise and has huge popularity and I’m pleased that we can keep up with the trend!

“The three new courts will be a perfect addition to the modern, forward-thinking sports offer we have in the borough and is a great compliment to the significant investment we have given to all of our centres making them modern and fit for purpose, offering quality and affordable leisure facilities to our residents.”

The new courts will complement the centre’s existing tennis, fitness, and leisure facilities, creating a vibrant destination for both casual players and competitive leagues.

Padel is a dynamic blend of tennis and squash played on an enclosed court and has surged in popularity across Europe and the UK in recent years. Known for its accessibility, fast rallies, and social appeal, the sport has attracted players of all ages and abilities, from complete beginners to seasoned racket sport enthusiasts.

With demand for padel growing nationwide, South Ribble’s move positions the borough at the forefront of the trend, offering residents the chance to experience a sport celebrated for its fun, fast pace and social atmosphere.

Further updates on construction timelines and opening dates will be shared in the coming months.
