South Ribble Borough Council has unveiled a new Culture Strategy setting out a bold, people centred vision to celebrate culture, creativity and community across the borough.

The strategy focuses on making culture more visible in everyday places – from parks and high streets to libraries, markets and neighbourhood venues – and ensuring residents have lots of opportunities to get involved.

Developed following extensive research and engagement with local residents, creatives and organisations, the strategy recognises that creativity is already thriving in South Ribble. Its ambition is to connect, support and amplify what already exists, while opening up new opportunities for participation, partnership and investment.

The strategy is built around three priorities – people and participation, place and identity and partnership and investment.

Over the next two years, residents can expect to see a programme of visible, community‑led activity including:

  • Doorstep Culture – pop‑up workshops, performances and seasonal events in neighbourhood spaces
  • Behind the Wall – a mural programme co‑created with residents
  • Creative Cafés creative, inclusive meet‑ups
  • Story of Us – community‑led heritage and storytelling projects popping up in public spaces
  • New opportunities for local artists and creatives

The council will also launch a digital platform to make it easier for residents to discover what’s on across South Ribble and to raise the profile of local creative talent.

The Culture Strategy aligns with wider regeneration, wellbeing and visitor economy ambitions, including the opportunity to develop a UK Town of Culture bid for Leyland.

Councillor Matthew Farnworth, Cabinet Member for Parks, Events and Culture, said:

“This strategy recognises that culture in South Ribble already belongs to its people. This strategy lays out our plans to allow creativity space to grow, making culture more visible, and ensuring everyone has the chance to take part and feel proud of where they live.”

The strategy will be delivered in partnership with local communities, artists, organisations and regional partners, with progress monitored through clear measures of participation, inclusion and impact.
