Enabling works for the new market square and commercial buildings on the site of Ecroyd Street car park in Leyland will begin on Monday 19 January, kicking off a new and exciting phase.
The project is moving at pace and will see a full transformation of Leyland Town Centre with a refurbished Leyland Market, a new dedicated market square and commercial and affordable residential properties.
From Monday 19 January, Ecroyd Street car park will permanently close allowing for the enabling works for the new market square and commercial development to begin. People should expect to see fencing and hoarding being erected in the area from this date.
Councillor Matthew Tomlinson, Leader of South Ribble Borough Council said, “2026 will see the Leyland Town Deal works develop rapidly, and it’s great that we can kick off the new year with work commencing on what will be a fantastic new market square for the town centre.
“The new square will be framed by new commercial buildings and the refurbished Leyland Market and will act as a fantastic public space in the heart of the town. I look forward to seeing the work progressing.”
Local company Eric Wright Construction will be delivering the works which are expected to be complete in 2027 along with the refurbishment of Leyland Market.
Steve Reid, Pre-Construction Director at Eric Wright Construction said, “We are delighted to commence the enabling works on what will see the transformation of Leyland Town Centre. This significant milestone represents the successful conclusion of an extensive and detailed design process undertaken in a collaborative manner with South Ribble Borough Council. We look forward to providing further updates as the construction works progress.”
Already significant progress has been made on the construction of affordable homes, which will be managed by the council, on the site of the former Iddons Factory and enabling work has taken place in the market building to allow for its full refurbishment.
Councillor Tomlinson continued, “As with many large-scale development projects, a vast amount of work is largely unseen. Lots of enabling works and preparation needs to be done to allow for significant build or refurbishment to take place and much of this work has now been done.
“This year people will see work happening very visibly and at pace and I hope people can see the value this work will bring to Leyland and the impact it will have on the town for generations to come.”
