South Ribble Borough Council’s multi-million-pound investment programme is giving a much-needed workout to its four leisure centres improving gym, pool, changing and reception areas.
With work set to be complete by the end of the year, the centres have already gone through a series of decarbonisation works to make them more energy efficient and fit for the future.
Councillor Clare Hunter, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Health and Wellbeing said, “We’ve said from the start that it was our aim to have quality and affordable centres available for people locally and it’s been great to see all the works across our four centres progress.
“At a time where many councils are choosing to close their leisure centres, I am so proud that we are able to take a different path, recognising the value of our facilities.”
The tennis courts at South Ribble Tennis Centre have been resurfaced and along with Leyland and Bamber Bridge Leisure Centres, gym equipment has been updated with additional state-of the-art equipment added. Gym equipment upgrades have just begun in Penwortham Leisure Centre with the Tennis Centre gym to follow.
At Leyland and Bamber Bridge Leisure Centres, new pool changing areas, toilets and showers have been created – with Leyland’s reopening just last weekend. Also at Leyland Leisure Centre, the pool surround has been re-tiled and the pool glazing, and pool cover has been replaced. A new dry side changing has been installed.
Penwortham Leisure Centre is also due a series of wet-side upgrades with new pool changing areas, toilets, and showers almost complete.
Leyland’s new reception area has recently reopened, with Bamber Bridge and Penwortham centres also set to benefit from redesigned reception areas, with the work moving at pace, offering a stylish and modern entrance for members.
All work is set to be complete by the end of 2025.
Councillor Hunter continued, “There is still some work left to do, but members should already be seeing the benefits of our improvement programme.
“If you’re not a member and want to check out our upgraded facilities, free gym passes are available now! Pick up a pass from Leyland or Bamber Bridge Leisure Centre receptions anytime from now until the end of the year.
“Members are also welcome to pick up a pass for a friend or family member to try the new gyms!”*
There will also be a membership offer available for purchase between 10 and 17 October – a multi-centre membership including swimming, gym, and classes for just £80. That’s four months for the price of three!
