South Ribble Borough Council has supported over 6000 children with regular exercise and movement through Dance from the Heart - now in its 10th year.
The year-long project, delivered by the council’s Active Health team, aims to promote more physical activity in and out of school, helping children to achieve the Chief Medical Officer's 60 Active Minutes per day.
Councillor Clare Hunter, Cabinet Member for Leisure and Wellbeing, said, “Children's mental health is a crucial component of their overall wellbeing as well as their school and home environment, and we know that movement and exercise is a great way to support in their development.
“As a council we don’t have direct responsibility for children and young people, but I am proud that we are able to develop and deliver services that promote wellbeing and inclusion which enables our young people to thrive.”
The Dance from the Heart project sees all school children learn the same routine. Practicing since January, the project ended with spectacular week of dance in July where each school put on a fantastic showcase!
Councillor Hunter attended performances at St Aidan's CofE Primary School, The Coppice School and Cuerden Church School.
She continued, “To see all the children getting involved working together and enjoying their movement was a joy to see.
“Across the year we deliver so many initiatives designed to support our young people into health and wellbeing and over the summer we have even more free, or low-cost activities people can get involved in.”
