The council’s planning approach for their flagship Jubilee Gardens extra care complex won the RTPI (Royal Town Planning Institute) Northwest award for Excellence in Planning for Communities.

The sought-after awards are designed to showcase and reward outstanding achievements in planning and aim to celebrate the contribution made by the planning profession to communities and the quality of life across the world. They also seek to raise awareness and understanding of the pioneering work of the planning industry.

South Ribble Borough Council was able to demonstrate that planners displayed effective leadership and collaboration, by working with other departments and services such as the Council’s own building control and property services, and that there was a strong commitment to engage with our community and other stakeholders.  This project has been led by the council from start to finish on land that the council owned, to deliver a scheme that the council had identified was needed and will now be operated by the council’s own staff.

Inclusive planning was a consideration, and it was demonstrated that the council was able to ensure that the project delivered community health, wellbeing and cohesion and that the spaces created were safe and accessible for all.

Finally, commitment to climate change actions were rewarded with the council demonstrating how the project enhances biodiversity, is sustainable and overall contributes to Net Zero aims.

Councillor Colin Sharples, Cabinet Member for Economic Growth and Planning at South Ribble Borough Council said, “I am so incredibly pleased that the hard work of our planning team has been recognised in this way.

“Jubilee Gardens is a flagship project for the council – the first of its kind, and to demonstrate award winning approaches recognised regionally is a real testament to the talent of our teams and our organisation’s overall commitment to excellence!”
