Leyland Market refurb

Work to refurbish Leyland Market as part of the multi-million-pound Leyland Town Deal is moving at pace.

Structural surveys have taken place at the site and Lancashire based firm Anglo Asbestos have removed all asbestos from the building ready for the start of the full refurbishment works.

All existing stalls have now been removed, with a blank canvas now in place ahead of the refurbishment works to the Market.

Councillor Matthew Tomlinson, Leader of South Ribble Borough Council said, “I’m delighted to see work progressing at the Leyland Market site. This is a core project as part of the Leyland Town Deal and we hope that this refurbishment will allow for a modern and fit-for-purpose market offer in the town.

“We are expanding the market to look out across a new market square, and we expect this to become a hub for the community to meet, have fun, and enjoy all that Leyland has to offer.”

As part of the refurbishment, the interior of the existing market building will be updated with new stalls including central stalls, an expanded food offer and the provision of a bar.

The market will also include new external stalls to have a direct relationship to a new market square.

Finally, the market hall structure will be refurbished while retaining the internal historic building structure (formerly a Leyland Motors building), and the long-term problematic roof will be replaced with a new sustainable structure.

The work forms part of the exciting multi-million-pound Leyland Town Deal project which will see the transformation of the town centre and the market along with highways and public realm improvements.

Following the demolition of the former Iddon’s factory off Quin Street in January 2025, Tyson Construction commenced the construction of a 22-unit residential development along with a new public car park. The enabling works for this have now concluded, including foundations and drainage.

The current forecast for the Leyland Market opening and completion is late 2026.
