South Ribble's new Mayor, Cllr Paul Wharton-Hardman BEM and Consort Mr Chris Wharton-Hardman, were sworn in at the Council's annual meeting on Wednesday 14 May.

Paul has served as a borough councillor for more than 10 years, tirelessly supporting his community and encouraging others to overcome barriers. Regularly speaking at local universities, urging students to believe in themselves and not be held back by the expectations of others.

Growing up in a terraced house, the son of two hard-working parents who never had the chance to go to college or university.

Paul’s life since then has been built on grit, resilience, and a deep commitment to helping others.

Paul has worked with two NHS ambulance trusts, volunteered thousands of hours during the COVID pandemic, and was awarded the British Empire Medal for his frontline service. He’s also completed a degree in Adult Nursing and is close to finishing his MSc, working in senior healthcare management to improve patient care.

Commenting on his appointment as Mayor, Councillor Wharton-Hardman said, “As Mayor, I have chosen Equality and Inclusion as the theme for this year.

"As a gay man with ADHD, I understand what it means to be labelled and underestimated. But I know those labels don’t define who you are or what you can achieve.

"Alongside my husband Chris we are standing up for a community where everyone feels seen, heard, and supported, whatever their background or identity.”.

Councillor Paul Wharton-Hardman and Consort Mr Chris Wharton-Hardman will take over from Councillor Peter Mullineaux and Mayoress Mrs Margaret McManus.

During his year in office, Paul will be supporting four local charities: Teddies for Loving Care, St Catherine’s Hospice, S.L.E.A.P., and Miles of Smiles, who provide vital work for children, families, and communities across South Ribble.

The new Deputy Mayor will be Councillor Caleb Tomlinson and Deputy Mayoress Mrs Linda Tomlinson.

Councillor Jacky Alty, Leader of South Ribble Council said, "Congratulations to Paul Wharton-Hardman and Chris Wharton-Hardman on becoming the new Mayor and Consort of South Ribble.
