South Ribble Borough Council’s Cabinet has approved a project to introduce a pedestrian crossing on a busy Farington road.
South Ribble Borough Council’s Cabinet has approved a project to introduce a pedestrian crossing on a busy Farington road following a study which found that a new crossing could improve safety, resulting in fewer accidents.
The road regularly sees motorists travelling over the 30mph speed limit and there have been two collisions on the road in the last five years.
South Ribble’s Central Villages Community Hub expressed concerns about the safety of the road and have championed the project in discussions the council’s Cabinet.
The preferred location for the zebra crossing is on Stanifield Lane to the left of Stephenson Avenue. Now the project and funding are approved, designs will be drawn up for public consultation.
Councillor Aniela Bylinski Gelder, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Communities and Housing said, “It’s great that we have been able to approve this project to enhance the safety of one of the borough’s busy roads.
“We know that many people unfortunately speed on this road, and with its proximity to Farington Park and Playground, there is a clear need for a pedestrian crossing, and I want to thank our Central Villages Community Hub for driving this project forward.
“I look forward to seeing this project progress.”
The project will cost circa £80,000 with funding provided from South Ribble’s Neighbourhood Improvement Fund, section 106 monies (which is money received by the council from local development projects) and a £10,000 contribution from Farington Parish Council.
Councillor Shaun Bradbury, Chairman of Farington Parish Council said “Farington Parish Council earmarked £10,000 towards a crossing some time ago, and we are delighted that subject to public consultation it will now be installed to help keep our residents safe”
South Ribble Borough Council will work with Lancashire County Council as the highways authority.
