The National Forum for Health and Wellbeing (NFHW), a registered charity dedicated to public outreach and health promotion since 2001, is collaborating with South Ribble Borough Council.
These two organisations, in partnership with the Leyland Rotary Club, are inviting local residents to the upcoming Leyland Health Mela, held at South Ribble’s Civic Centre in Leyland on Saturday 26th September 2026 from 11 am till 3 pm.
For 25 years, NFHW has empowered communities across the UK to lead healthier lives. The charity has successfully organised over 70 Health Melas nationwide, attracting more than 20,000 visitors. Its innovative model of community health engagement has also been replicated internationally, demonstrating its global impact.
These Health Melas have consistently been a highlight among NFHW’s annual events, drawing strong participation from local communities and healthcare providers. This year’s event will be attended by the Mayor of South Ribble Borough Council, Councillor Caleb Tomlinson, Rotarian Annette Ramsden PHF, Rotary District Governor of Cumbria and Lancashire and Dr Sakthi Karunanithi, Director of Public Health for Lancashire, as Guests of Honour along with local MPs and representatives of other partner organisations.
Professor Romesh Gupta OBE, Chairman of NFHW, said:
“I am delighted to see the organisation grow over the past 25 years from a modest beginning. Over the years, we have built partnerships with several organisations, local health trusts, councils, as well as educational institutions. I am pleased to state that these Health Melas, health seminars, and other activities have made a positive impact on health of the communities. Health MOTs have been accessed by over 10,000 people, with nearly 1,000 requiring further advice from healthcare professionals. Many have also benefited from a holistic approach to care, including exposure to alternative health therapies. This model of community health engagement and empowerment has been widely praised by numerous national dignitaries and replicated overseas.”
Councillor Matthew Tomlinson, Leader of South Ribble Borough Council said:
“We’re delighted to be partnering with the National Forum for Health and Wellbeing and Leyland Rotary Club to host this year's Leyland Health Mela. Bringing together leading health organisations, community groups, and local partners in one place, the event is a fantastic opportunity for residents to access free health checks, expert advice, and support in a friendly and welcoming environment.
“We are proud to support an initiative that encourages people to take positive steps towards better health and wellbeing, and we're looking forward to welcoming residents from across the borough to what promises to be a fantastic community event.
“This is just one of the many opportunities available to help residents improve their health and wellbeing right here in South Ribble. As a council, we are committed to putting residents first by working with our partners to provide accessible services, support and activities that help people live healthier, happier lives.”
The Health Mela has become a valued community tradition, offering a wide range of services and activities. This year’s event will feature approximately 40+ health-related stalls from organisations including the NHS, providing guidance and support on conditions such as cancer, diabetes, oral health, and mental health.
Attendees will also have access to free Health MOTs, including body vital checks, blood sugar and cholesterol testing, followed by professional medical advice. Additional attractions include Reiki taster sessions and interactive activities such as a smoothie bike, allowing participants to create and enjoy their own healthy drinks.
The event is being organised in partnership with the University of Lancashire, local NHS trusts, and a range of voluntary and statutory organisations.
The Leyland Health Mela is free to attend, with no prior booking required. Free parking will be available on the site.
