Battle of Bamber Bridge

Join with the local community of Bamber Bridge on Saturday 20th June to commemorate the 83rd anniversary of the Battle of Bamber Bridge.

From 1pm to 7pm at Ye Olde Hob Inn on Church Road in Bamber Bridge, you’ll be able to join with the local community, historians, families to reflect on a significant event in Lancashire’s history.

The event pays homage to the 1943 Battle of Bamber Bridge when residents stood up against racial violence at the Ye Olde Hob Inn where violence broke out involving American soldiers stationed in the village. The conflict was the result of a failed attempt by American commanders to racially segregate pubs in the Lancashire village. The battle began when white American military police attempted to arrest several African American soldiers in the Ye Olde Hob Inn. Local residents stood up in protest of the racial violence amongst the American forces.

The commemorative event is led by The Preston Black History Group in partnership with South Ribble Borough Council, University of Lancashire, Dunbia, Hospital Inn and Ye Olde Hob Inn. The event was also made possible by Bamber Bridge, Walton le dale and Eastern Parishes Community Hub for providing vital funding towards the event. The community hub plays a vital role in supporting local events throughout the community and more can be discovered on their Facebook page.

Commenting on the upcoming celebration, Councillor Aniela Bylinski Gelder, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Communities and Customers said, “Over the years, this commemorative event has continued to grow, reflecting the importance in remembering the Battle of Bamber Bridge and the stand taken by local residents against injustice. Each year, it provides a valuable opportunity to educate visitors from across Lancashire and beyond about the importance of equality and standing up against discrimination.

“As well as its educational value, the event is a wonderful chance for families to come together and enjoy a range of activities, making it a highlight of the summer calendar for our community.

“I want to thank the local Councillors who ensure this event goes ahead every year.”

The celebration of the Battle of Bamber Bridge has stood the test of time, being celebrated for decades across the local area. With numbers increasing year upon year, the scale of the event has evolved massively. Still incorporating the history of the battle to educate visitors the event now hosts face painters, circus performers, music and dance performers, food and drink stalls, World War Two era military vehicles and various children’s activities.

The free event is the perfect blend of local history and family fun. Spreading awareness about racism, local history and family activities for families of all ages and sizes to get involved in.
