What is an "Age Friendly Community"?
An Age Friendly Communities (AFC) is a place that enables people to age well and live a good later life. Somewhere poeple can stay living in their homes, participate in the activities they value, and contribute to their communities, for as long as possible.
It is a framework to make sure that older people are considered in an area, and it was all developed by the World Health Organisation.
In April 2025, South Ribble Borough Council applied to be accepted as a district, as a member of the UK Network of Age Friendly Communities..and we were accepted. we are the first district in Lancashire to be accepted.
We are now working hard to be an age friendly community - committed and supported - to making South Ribble a good place to age.
So what are we doing? What does this mean?
We have been out in the community across South Ribble and spoken to some people and some groups to find out what they think is good about their area - and what could be better.
We have put these results together, set up a steering group to discuss it all, and produced an Action Plan of what we would like to do and to achieve in the future.
We have started to work on issues around communication and information as one, and then transport as the other.
We hope to make a difference starting in these areas of the framework.
