Work begins on 15 affordable new homes at the former McKenzie Arms site in Bamber Bridge

McKenzie Arms - work begins

The start of works on the flagship development was marked on site by Leader of the Council, Paul Foster and Cabinet Member for Finance, Property, and Assets, Matthew Tomlinson along with a representative from contractor, Tyson Construction.

The site will house 15 affordable new homes - the first council owned properties developed by South Ribble Borough Council in 25 years.

The development will see three, three-bedroom townhouses, nine one-bedroom apartments and three two-bedroom apartments. All homes will be high quality affordable rented homes that meet all current space and energy standards which will aim to give a high level of comfort, using very little energy for heating and cooling.

Councillor Matthew Tomlinson said, "I'm so pleased that work has begun on this development. This piece of land - as all locals will know - has been derelict for a very long time and we've been dedicated to ensuring we can use the site for the benefit of our community and create brand new homes.

"We know that there is a need for high quality affordable homes in the area and we are delivering. South Ribble is a place where people can live well an thrive, and I cannot wait to see these new houses develop over the coming months."

The new homes are set to be affordable, safe, and environmentally friendly meeting the demand of housing stock in the area. The homes are being built close to a standard which will provide a reduction in energy bills, excellent indoor air quality which will help to alleviate allergies and respiratory problems and will work towards zero carbon targets (coupled with a small number of renewables).

Councillor Paul Foster said, "Take away any preconceptions you had about council owned homes. These properties will be of the highest standard and will allow for people to live well in an affordable and energy efficient home.

"These are the first of hopefully many homes we are building across the borough in over two decades and I'm so proud that we are able to provide South Ribble with the exact types of homes we need."

Funding for the development is being supported by Homes England and local provider, Tyson Construction has been appointed to deliver the works.

Jeremy Whittle, Managing Director of Tyson Construction said, "We are absolutely delighted to have been chosen by South Ribble Borough Council to construct this development of 15 houses and apartments that will be constructed to very high energy efficiency levels, reducing carbon emissions and energy costs for future occupants.

"The new Homes will be let on an Affordable Rent basis through Select Move where applicants must be able to demonstrate a local connection criterion which is great for local people and the local community".

The development is due to be complete Summer 2022.
