A licence is required if you keep or train animals for exhibition activities and this is carried out as a commercial business.

Examples of businesses requiring this type of licence include:

  • mobile animal exhibits that visit schools
  • weddings
  • private parties
  • fairs
  • any other events that have an audience
  • pony parties where the ponies are not ridden
  • businesses which keep animals for exhibition through electronic media, for example, animals used in films or TV

Keeping or Training Animals for Exhibition Licence Criteria

The licence conditions set out a range of requirements on the care and management of animals kept or trained for exhibition to protect their welfare. These include the need:

  • for a suitable environment
  • for a suitable diet and feeding plan
  • to be able to exhibit normal behaviour patterns
  • to be housed with, or apart from, other animals
  • to be protected from pain, suffering, injury, and disease
